What is the Difference Between Fine Lines and Wrinkles?

We’ve all seen them… those fine lines that are there one day and it seems like there are wrinkles there the next day.  So, what causes them and what’s the difference?

Fine Lines explained.

When we talk about fine lines, we are mainly talking about dehydration lines. They appear around the eyes or at the corner of the mouth, always in areas where the skin is the most delicate. Your good circulation normally ensures the entire face is hydrated evenly, but lots of factors can disturb this balance. First, there are external factors: pollution, tobacco, sun… Then there are harsh cosmetics and beauty treatments that dry out our complexion. The protective barrier of the skin becomes weakened over time and can no longer retain water.  This results in the skin becoming dehydrated and that’s when you see those fine lines appear.

There is one way to get rid of them: good hydration. Go for a skin care product that is rich in hyaluronic acid, lactic acid and sugar.

And that brings us to wrinkles – what exactly are they?

You usually start seeing wrinkles between the ages of 25 and 30. Wrinkles often appear around the eyes first but, as time goes by, they spread to other areas of our face too like wrinkles around mouth. Wrinkles appear when the skin’s support structure becomes weaker and the skin begins to crease. This structure is made up of fibers, collagen and elastin – which are joined by glycoproteins and glycosaminoglycans. As we get older, the metabolism of our cells slows down and a range of environmental factors cause free radicals to attack the fibers. As a result, the wrinkles get deeper. To combat these wrinkles, it’s important to choose an enriched skin care product containing retinol, hyaluronic acid, vitamin C, or glycolic acid, depending on the depth of the wrinkles.

So…are fine lines and wrinkles related?  What do they have in common?

Lines and wrinkles both first appear in areas where the skin is delicate and fragile: around the eyes, in the corner of the mouth, and around the neckline. The best way to avoid it is hydration and protection. It is essential to hydrate your skin daily and above all, wear your sunscreen – sun damage is the most significant cause of premature aging.

And remember, facial aging catches up with us all. Although dermal fillers are often the preferred treatment for smile lines and wrinkles, many of them yield results that are temporary and require repeat touch-ups in order to last. Bellafill is a different type of filler. It provides volume that’s both instant and lasting — so you don’t have to decide between looking great now and looking great later.

Next time we’ll discuss some more options that will help you age beautifully!
