How Dermal Fillers Can Help with Acne Scars

While your years of acne may be long gone, there are often scars left behind.  Dermal fillers are a great way to treat and potentially get rid of certain types of acne scars.  They are particularly effective for rolling scars and some less defined boxcar scars.

Boxcar scars are similar to chicken pox scars and have angular, well-defined edges that make them appear like a box. They create an indentation in the skin and are most often found on the temples or cheeks. Rolling scars create an indentation in the skin that looks like a wave, due to its wide size and shallow depth.

Inflammation also plays a leading role in the formation of scars. The inflammation caused by acne can impact the healing process and diminish the amount of helpful collagen that occurs naturally in skin. The result is the uneven, pitted appearance of acne scars. While scars may fade over time, they often don’t go away completely without help.   And, that help comes in the form of dermal fillers!

Dermal fillers are typically safe and well tolerated, with great results to fill the depressions that come along with acne scars.  They are an excellent way to replace to volume loss caused by acne scarring and they work by lifting the depressed area of the scars.  Most dermal fillers are temporary, lasting a few months; however Bellafill fades these scars by adding volume to them, bringing them to the level of the surrounding skin and keeping them there through 1 year. Bellafill® is the first, and only injectable filler that’s FDA approved to treat acne scars!

Yes, you can truly leave your “acne years” behind you!  We’ll talk about more in future blogs so stay tuned!
